The Problem

Our client was introducing a new Digital Imaging System for the Professional Photography market. The system was to be marketed through dealers, who would resell it to customers.

The system was quite different from previous products sold to this market, so it was anticipated that Dealers would need support in training their internal salespeople, as well as in training customers. However, because the price point for this system would be low, our client needed to find a way to provide Dealer and Customer training in a cost-effective manner.

Prometheus Approach/Solution

Collaboration with Marketing: We worked with the client’s marketing department to analyze the dealer/customer needs and technical requirements:

  • The marketing department determined that CD-based training was the most effective medium for delivering the training.
  • Because this training served a marketing function for an imaging company, we determined that the final product had to be a highly-polished production that show-cased our client’s expertise in photographic digital imaging

Designed for Multiple Audiences: We identified these audiences for the modules:

  • Dealer Sales
  • Dealer Support
  • End-Users

We broke the content into training modules, and created a course map that outlined the appropriate audience and sequence for each module.

Simulating the System Functionality: Many of the training modules related to how to use the system to optimize image quality. To show the power of this functionality and offer some practice in using the interface, we created simulations of some functionality, allowing the user to “manipulate the image” using the simulated system.

Sales Presentation Modules: We knew that some Dealers would hand the training CD to their customers, while other Dealers would have their Sales People present some CD-based training modules in workshop sessions. So we designed HTML-based presentations that could work either as self-study tutorials, or as live presentations.

Installation and Troubleshooting Modules: We also included a series of modules on system installation and troubleshooting. As with the Sales Presentation modules, these HTML modules were designed to be used either as self-study or live presentations. Links to technical documentation were embedded in the modules.

Program Packaging: We created a professional-looking package, including an attractive CD silk-screen image and CD cover art.

Result/Benefit to Client

Marketing enjoyed a successful product launch, with good acceptance of the training approach from Dealers and End Users.

Dealers had a mechanism for getting their sales and support people trained and ready to sell the new system.

Dealer Sales People had a source of high-end, professionally-polished presentations that showed off their expertise as well as the quality of the imaging system.

End Users received the training they needed to get up-to-speed on the new system quickly, and make good use of the various bells-and-whistles available in the system.
