The Who, When and Why of Testing

Tests evaluate the skill level of a learner. Here are some common uses for tests:
Before a course -- Pre-tests
- To assess whether the learner has prerequisite entry level skills for the course
- To allow the learner to "test out" of course material on topics he/she has already mastered
Within a course
- To identify areas in which the learner needs additional guidance or practice in order to achieve mastery
- To provide reinforcement for mastering newly-learned skills
After a course -- Post-tests
- To identify areas in which the learner needs additional guidance or practice
- To evaluate which areas of a course need strengthening
- To prove to an interested party (Manager, Certifying Body, Regulatory Agency, Human Resources Manager, etc.) that a learner successfully completed the course requirements
