The Who, When and Why of Testing

Tests evaluate the skill level of a learner. Here are some common uses for tests:

Before a course -- Pre-tests

  • To assess whether the learner has prerequisite entry level skills for the course
  • To allow the learner to "test out" of course material on topics he/she has already mastered

Within a course

  • To identify areas in which the learner needs additional guidance or practice in order to achieve mastery
  • To provide reinforcement for mastering newly-learned skills

After a course -- Post-tests

  • To identify areas in which the learner needs additional guidance or practice
  • To evaluate which areas of a course need strengthening
  • To prove to an interested party (Manager, Certifying Body, Regulatory Agency, Human Resources Manager, etc.) that a learner successfully completed the course requirements
