Course Description

One of the most frustrating challenges of management is dealing with an under-performing employee.

Confronting the performance problem may cause the employee to become resentful and uncooperative. Ignoring the problem may send the wrong signal to other employees in the work group. What is the best course of action?

Coaching is a tool that managers can use to help employees become successful at their jobs. This course begins with an analysis section, to help the manager determine whether Coaching is an appropriate intervention for the particular employee and performance problem. Then the course provides a step-by-step plan for how to Coach, and presents strategies for dealing with special types of performance problems.

The format is highly interactive, with plenty of case studies, scenarios and activities to keep your managers engaged. On-the-job worksheets and tools also are included in the package.

Performance Objectives

By the end of this program, learners will be able to:

• Identify which employee performance problems are appropriate for a coaching approach.
• Create agreement with an employee that a performance problem exists.
• Discuss and agree upon potential solution to the performance problem.
• Create a performance plan to monitor progress.
• Identify the appropriate performance-improvement strategy in special situations.
• Assess coaching readiness and create an action plan to facilitate coaching.

Instructional Strategy

Classroom session presents information using slides, lecture, case study and structured discussion. After each section of the presentation, interactive exercises are used to reinforce learning, as well as keep learners engaged. Worksheets are provided to facilitate transfer of new skills back to the job. An optional final test (15 questions) is also included.
